An Asian Blepharoplasty (or Asian eyelid surgery) consists of surgically creating a crease in the eyelid in order to establish the double eyelid fold that is a sought after feature in Asian cultures. This a pretty simple procedure that consists of either suturing the eyelid or making a small incision in the natural crease to excise a small amount of fat and muscle to create this favorable characteristic. It can be done in office under local anesthetic as an outpatient procedure, or in combination with other surgeries under general anesthetic. Patient may return to work in 2 days time and can expect a full recovery in 2 weeks in order for swelling to subside.

The roots of Asian blepharoplasty: Asian Eyelid Surgery has been performed in the Japanese culture as far back as 1896, when the first instance of eyelid surgery was documented by the Japanese surgeon Mikamo. This surgery involved suturing the eyelid to give it the double eyelid fold found favorable in many Asian cultures. Nevertheless, eyelid surgery has come a long way since it took its roots in the late 19th Century. Although many of the techniques that are used today were established through the years by various doctors, they have been perfected by modern medicine in order to give patients their desired outcome.

Asian blepharoplasty surgery requires precision, aesthetic artistry and understanding of individual ethnic background. Korean, Japanese, Chinese and other South Asian countries each have their own individual eyelid beauty. Dr. Azizzadeh’s Caucasian background has allowed him to objectively produce the most natural and ethnically appropriate eyelids for an Asian individual.

General Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelift, has gone through a significant transformation over the past five years. Traditionally, blepharoplasty surgery involves the removal of significant fat, skin and muscle in order to obtain what is perceived as “youthful” eyes. This approach can result in hollowness of the eye area and a “cat-like” look of the corner of the eyes that looks unnatural and changes the entire appearance of the person. Also, complications were more common with these types of procedures.

Today we know that the aging changes around the eyes does not just involve sagging skin. It has multiple components such as loss of skin elasticity, drooping of the eyebrows and cheek fat pads and weakness of supporting eyelid structures that lead to puffiness under the eyes. In the evaluation of aging eyes the forehead and mid face also need to be thoroughly evaluated.

Through a better understanding of eyelid anatomy, facial analysis and aging changes, Dr. Azizzadeh utilizes a very different approach to blepharoplasty correction, korean double eyelid surgery and eyelid surgery asian. His approach can include the use of dermal fillers (Restylane, Juvederm), injectable Botox/Dysport, fractionated laser skin resurfacing, conservative surgical eyelid contouring (Blepharoplasty), fat grafting, and/or endoscopic browlift to create the most natural and long-standing results.  With this method each individual receives a personalized approach to their blepharoplasty correction. The results are natural and involve minimal risks, complications or down-time.  Learn more about regular blepharoplasty here.
