Number of Plastic Surgeries Continues To Grow
According to a new report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), plastic surgeries continue to grow, despite the sluggish economy. 13.8 million plastic surgery procedureswere performed in 2011, which was a 5% increase compared to 2010. Moreover, by the end of 2011, the number of total plastic surgeries had grown for 24 consecutive months.
The five most common cosmetic procedures of 2011 were blepharoplasty/eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty/nose jobs, rhytidectomy/facelift, liposuction, and breast implants. 1.6 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2011, and chin augmentations, also known as chin implants, rose by 71% compared to 2010 – more than any other cosmetic procedure. According to the report, the noticeable increase in surgical procedures reflects the demands of an aging boomer population.
However, the overall growth in cosmetic procedures is primarily driven by a substantial rise in minimally invasive procedures. There were 12.2 million minimally invasive procedures last year, which was a rise of 6%. The most popular procedures of 2011 were Botox, fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion. What stood out the most among the increases in minimally invasive procedures were softtissue fillers like Radiesse, Restylane, and Juvederm.
