Improving an Awkward Chin
Many people are unhappy with the appearance of their chin. Sometimes dimple-like bumps can be present on the chin keeping it from looking smooth and well-defined, or the chin is recessed and weak looking. When it comes to chin augmentation, Babak Azizzadeh, MD, FACS, world-renowned facial plastic surgeon, has a few different cutting-edge treatment options to meet your needs and give you the chin you’ve always wanted.
Find the Cause
It is important to know what exactly is causing the chin’s specific appearance. For example, chin dimpling is often caused by a hyperactive mentalis muscle, known as “peau d’orange.” This condition is usually treated with Botox injections. The Botox, when injected by a specialist, will relax the overactive mentalis muscle, which will give the chin a smoother appearance.
If a patient has a recessed chin, it is important that a full examination of dentition and bite (occlusion) are performed to see if the patient may benefit from orthognathic surgery. Orthognathic surgery involves relocating the jawbones into the appropriate position to improve dentition, bite, and overall appearance. This procedure should only be used in cases where the patient is suffering from major functional bite issues.
If a patient’s recessed chin is not causing bite issues, rather they are looking for simply aesthetic improvement, the patient may want to consider a chin implant. Dr. Azizzadeh performs chin implants using a silicone implant that provides a natural-looking result. During your chin implant consultation, Dr. Azizzadeh will listen to your specific desires, examine your chin, and create a customized treatment plan to provide you with an optimal chin augmentation outcome. During the chin implant surgery, Dr. Azizzadeh uses the smallest incision possible and can significantly, and permanently, improve a patient’s profile and jawline.
Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation
As mentioned previously, Botox injections can be used to relax a hyperactive mentalis muscle causing chin dimpling. Other injectable treatments can also be used to give the patient their desired chin. While this is not a permanent solution, facial filler and Botox injections can be repeated as needed when results wear off.
A non-surgical chin augmentation involves the creation of a treatment plan that will utilize the facial filler and/or neuromodulator best for your particular condition. For example, a patient with a weak, dimpled chin looking for a temporary solution may want Botox to smooth out the chin dimpling, and a facial filler injection such as Juvederm to fill in a chin crease. It is also common for patients to undergo other cosmetic procedures at the same time as chin augmentation to ensure all facial features are balanced. For a permanent solution, however, surgical chin augmentation is the best option.
