Hyperbaric Oxygen and Revision Surgery
A hyperbaric chamber is a room that allows an individual to breathe 100% pure oxygen at greater than 1 standard atmosphere of pressure. The chambers are used to deliver hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which initially was developed to treat underwater divers suffering from decompression sickness. It has since been approved by the Hyperbaric Medical Society for several different conditions, including but not limited to smoke inhalation, radiation tissue damage, thermal burns, non-healing skin grafts, serious blood loss, and wounds that fail to heal through conventional treatment. Dr. Azizzadeh, on the other hand, uses hyperbaric oxygen for complex revision rhinoplasty and revision facelift patients who have compromised soft tissue.
The Benefits of Hyperbaric Chambers
There are many benefits of hyperbaric chambers, and it has been proven to shorten the healing time related to soft tissue injuries, skin grafts, and reconstructive or plastic surgery. Hyperbaric chambers can, moreover, help resolve unexpected complications post-surgery, dramatically reduce post-surgical bruising, swelling, and inflammation, and speed up healing and recovery time from elective surgery. By using these chambers, the post-surgery bruising goes away faster, swelling decreases quicker, and the patients actually end up feeling much better overall.
By using hyperbaric oxygen for some of our revision surgeries, we are able to help patients who have compromised soft tissue. As a result, patients actually end up feeling much better overall post-surgery. We often recommend hyperbaric oxygen for patients who need revision rhinoplasty or facelift procedures because of its healing effects and many other benefits.
