How young should you start caring for your skin?

A baby is born with extremely soft, smooth and supple skin. It will take years for their skin to start showing the signs of aging, but how young should you start worrying about it?

First, lets review the two major categories of aging:

  • The natural process of aging where the skin starts to lose elastin and collagen production and cell turnover slows down.
  • External factors like the sun and pollution damage the skin.

Certain habits also speed up the aging process, such as smoking which sucks up the vitamin C and keratin necessary for collagen production. Smoking can also damage elastic and affect the color of your skin, turning it grey and dull compared to the glow it used to have.

Stress, hormones, gravity and what you eat are also factors, which is why most Dr. Azizzadeh recommends a balanced, antioxidant rich diet with lots of fluids.

But the biggest agent that will age your skin is the sun. Freckles, age spots, spider veins, rough skin and fine wrinkles can all be traced to sun exposure. A lot of the sun damage adults see is actually from the sun they were exposed to as a child.

It is harder to reverse damage than it is to prevent it.

The easiest way to prevent sun damage is to wear a broad spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen every single day. We should be protecting our children from the sun and getting them into the habit of wearing sunscreen from an early age. One of our favorite sunscreens is Solar Protection Formula by Tizo, which comes in tinted and non-tinted formulas.

In the morning you want to use skincare products to protect your skin and prevent damage, and at night you want to use products that repair damage. One of our favorite products to repair damage is TNS Essential Serum by SkinMedica which has potent antioxidants, peptides and growth factors.
