Everything You Need to Know About Chin Augmentation!
Have you ever thought your chin was too small or sunken? Or perhaps your chin is too prominent? If you’ve ever thought your chin wasn’t quite right, you may benefit from a chin augmentation. Babak Azizzadeh, MD, FACS, Director of the CENTER for Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery, is a highly regarded facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon known for his facial rejuvenation expertise and successful chin augmentation procedures.
What is Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the chin. There are two types of mentoplasty—chin reduction and chin augmentation. A chin reduction surgery is performed when a patient is unhappy with the appearance of an overly prominent chin and it involves removing bone in the chin to reduce the size or moving the jawbone to get the desire face shape. A chin augmentation generally involves the use of a chin implant to increase the size and prominence of a small chin.
Dr. Azizzadeh utilizes VECTRA imaging technology during the patient’s consultation to give the patient an image of what the chin augmentation results could look like. This allows the patient and doctor to thoroughly discuss the desired outcome and the patient to be certain they are happy with the treatment plan.
There are two methods of chin reduction used to reduce the size of a prominent chin. A direct reduction is a procedure in which the surgeon removes excess bone from the chin and it is shaped into the desired contour. A sliding genioplasty is performed in some instances and involves cutting the bone of the jaw, sliding it backward to the desired position, and then holding it in place with screws. If you are considering a chin reduction, Dr. Azizzadeh will examine your chin and discuss your desired outcome with you during your consultation to see if a chin reduction is right for you.
If a patient feels their chin is not prominent enough or is not proportionate to the rest of their face, a chin augmentation may be the answer. Dr. Azizzadeh prefers to use a pliable silicone implant that incorporates nicely and feels natural. He also emphasizes selecting the right shape for the implant to ensure a nice, smooth jawline from every angle. Sometimes a sliding genioplasty is performed at the same time as a chin implant in which the bone is cut and slid forward to improve chin prominence. A chin augmentation performed by expert facial plastic surgeon Dr. Babak Azizzadeh can give you the strong jawline you’ve always wanted.
Chin Augmentation with Other Cosmetic Procedures
Dr. Azizzadeh always strives to provide his patients with the most natural looking results possible. That means that the overall balance of the face needs to be considered before performing any cosmetic procedure. To ensure facial symmetry and optimal results, it is common for patients to get other procedures, such as a facelift, rhinoplasty, Botox, or facial fillers, at the same time as a chin augmentation. Discuss all of your options with the doctor during your consultation.
